For those that are new to Fantasy Football I would probably recommend working off a cheat sheet or a draft guide (some that I will be recommending next week.) However this year I’m going to take my game to the next level- and try and make up my own lists. It’s definitely a daunting task but I think I’m ready to try it.
In today’s world of professional amateurs- do I think I am better than the experts? No way. For me projecting players on my own gives me an advantage in learning and immersing myself into the entire player pool in the NFL. Projecting my own players also gives me a base of opinions so when I do read the experts- I can take it with a grain of salt. Let’s remember we can’t predict the future- but we can make some educated guesses. Here are some things I’m keeping in mind when I project players:
- Work in a vacuum - Like I was saying above, what I want to do is to look at players on my own and then I’ll look at what the “experts” are writing. It’s been really hard to resist reading the articles but I’m excited to play the part of expert for my own lists.
- Look at 3 year stats and game logs – The three years of stats is a common rule when looking at a player’s past history. I am also going to be reviewing 2007 game logs to see where the trends are in how consistent a player will be.
- Be aware of age – This is not a hard and fast rule but it’s a factor to think about when looking at players- there are lots of players that are going to be studs for years. However there are some ideas out there that Running Backs decline at 28, Tight Ends at 29, Wide Receivers decline at 30 and Quarterbacks age after 32. It’s something to think about for some of the “just average players out there.”
- Know the team scheme – How does a team play football? Are they high flying passers like the Detroit Lions? Then you have to consider than when looking at how often their Running Backs are going to be used.
There are some other factors I’ll be think about when looking at a players:
- Strength of Offensive Line
- Strength of Schedule
- Health Issues
- Role on the team/depth chart
Just a few things to think about if you want to become your own Fantasy Football expert.
