Fantasy Football: The Diet Yahoo League
By Patrick, on September 4th, 2008 at 08:30 AM
I thought I joined too many leagues in baseball this year when I had three going on. Apparently I don’t learn from my mistakes.
I was ok with just two Fantasy Football leagues but when I got back from my trip this weekend I get a text from LJ: “You wanna play in our fantasy football league?”
How could I turn down an offer to draft again?
I find out that it’s only a league of LJ’s house and some friends, total size: six people. Sounds like another opportunity to create a stud team and play it out. I find out that since it’s so small roster sizes are gigantic: you start 4 RBs, 5 WRs, 2 TEs, and only 1 QB. Looks like we are all going RB/WR shopping.
I also find out the draft was in two hours. Not a problem.
I quickly review the news of the day and take a look at the scoring system and then I was off to LJ’s house for the draft.
The draft went smooth, I took the approach of building my team around stud RBs and WRs. With only 1 QB needed to start I was guaranteed a top 10 guy. I draft heavy on RBs and WRs and ended up missing out on a lot of the TE depth that was around. Not a problem since I now have plenty of trade pieces to use.
So what happens when you play in a six team league? You end up with an all-star team:
Diet Yahoo Team (Donte’s $37 Million)
- QB: Carson Palmer (Broken Nose? No problem. I was originally targeted Drew Brees but he got off the board in the 10th round- so I went ahead and made sure I got Palmer before I’d have to settle for McNabb. QBs going so late? That’s what happens when you play in a diet league.)
- RB: Brian Westbrook (I had the second pick and I’ve been slowly jumping on this bandwagon)
- RB: Marshawn Lynch (In a normal league just having these two would pretty much make me the champion but it gets even better…)
- RB: Jamal Lewis (Snagged him the in the 5th round and I think he’ll be ok- if not look who else I got…)
- RB: Thomas Jones (I was high on him in my last draft and I still am- he’s my upside guy while Lewis may be my possible downside guy)
- WR: Reggie Wayne (Like a Lollipop… oh wait that’s Lil’ Wayne…)
- WR: T.J. Houshmandzadeh (Just got paid, that’s all I gotta say.)
- WR: Torry Holt (I originally had the position that he may be getting old but I’m slowly turning around on that)
- WR: Jerricho Cotchery (I believe that Favre gives this guy a huge boost.)
- WR: Donald Driver (I also believe that this guy is going to get more targets than Greg Jennings.)
- TE: Tony Scheffler (I only drafted 1 TE- I figured I can pick up another off the wire then trade to get at least 1 stud.)
- K: Shayne Graham (If all goes well he’ll be my waiver wire pick)
- DEF: Pittsburgh (Sorry Donte’)
- QB: Ben Roethlisberger (weird enough- this guy was my backup in my office team last year- now he’s backing me up again.)
- RB: Darren McFadden (Run DMC- and he’s my bench player!)
- RB: Ricky Williams (I drafted him late and somebody yelled, “You know he smokes pot!” Of course I know- that’s why I drafted him late.)
- RB: Rashard Mendenhall (He’s becoming another upside guy I’ve been targeting- but then again who isn’t targeting this guy?)
- RB: Felix Jones (Watching Hard Knocks does that to you.)
- RB: Chris Perry (Out goes Rudi and in comes Perry.)
- WR: Santana Moss (In bigger leagues most teams have to start him- now I can stash him and see if the new offense works out- also now I have some one to root for when I watch those local games)
- WR: Sidney Rice (Let’s hope somebody catches a pass in Minnesota)
The team name is a play off Stallworth’s huge contract with the Browns. LJ and I have an inside joke about the constantly overhyped guy. With the last pick of the draft I had to stay true and made Donte Mr. Irrelevant. Since I didn’t draft a kicker or defense I then immedately dropped him for a defense.
