Fantasy Football: Week 1 Review

2008_09_08t152732_327x450_us_nfl_bradyIt’s the image I wasn’t expecting Sunday afternoon.

Wendi and I were enjoying the Patriots game at Buffalo Billiards when we saw Bernard Pollard tackle Tom Brady. That hit would tear both the ACL and MCL in Brady’s knee- ending a season that was only minutes old. This injury has rippled through the NFL- even Pollard is deeply sorry for the hit. The AFC is now wide open as it appears that the favorites to win the Super Bowl took a big hit.

As a Patriots fan I am depressed by the news- but I will remain hopeful. Yes it’s now the Matt Cassel era and my friend Sean is already proclaiming that the Patriots will end 9 -7.

71465469EG021_Houston_TexanNow Matt’s story is an interesting one- career backup to Heisman Trophy Quarterbacks Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart. After arriving at the Patriots also served behind Heisman winners Doug Flutie and Vinny Testaverde. Basically if you have won the award, no matter when, you are automatically put above Cassel.

Ok so we know Cassel isn’t Tom Brady- however there are still some talented players on that team and I think we can still keep it close . Let’s take a look at the schedule:

  • Week 2 – Jets: This will be the first real test for Cassel, normally we can consider the Patriots the favorites- even with Brett Favre under center. Now I think the Jets have a chance and it’s kinda scary. If Cassel and manage this game well I think we are going to be better off than most think. Prediction: Loss
  • Week 3 – Dolphins: The Dolphins always keep it close but I think playing in Foxboro will help us out. Prediction: Win
  • Week 4 – Bye
  • Week 5 – 49ers: Cassel is better than J.T. O’Sullivan. Prediction: Win
  • Week 6 – Chargers: If we can stop LT we might have a chance. Prediction: Loss
  • Week 7 – Broncos: Cassel vs. Cutler seems like a pretty even match. Prediction: Win
  • Week 8 – Rams: Oh I hope it’s a shootout- on our side, our defense will have no problem with that Rams. Prediction: Win
  • Week 9 – Colts: Ugh. These games are always close but now it prolly won’t be. Prediction: Loss
  • Week 10 – Bills: A lot of people are saying this team now has a chance in the division. I still think Edwards isn’t that great. Prediction: Win
  • Week 11 – Jets: We’ll probablysplit the series. Prediction: Win
  • Week 12 – Dolphins: If we can’t own the Dolphins- then this season is lost. Prediction: Win
  • Week 13 – Steelers: Ya I’ll give my co-worker Neal credit. This might not be a great game. Prediction: Loss
  • Week 14 – Seahawks: With Hasselbeck and all his receivers also injured- I totally seeing as a close game. Prediction: Win
  • Week 15 – Raiders: It’s the Raiders. Prediction: Win
  • Week 16 – Cardinals: I like Warner a lot this season- he might throw his way to victory. Prediction: Loss
  • Week 17 – Bills: It’s going to be snowy and messy. Prediction: Loss

So that makes the Pats 10-6. Hmm maybe Sean wasn’t so off after all.

Ok a quick recap of my teams:

TMG Sportsline League

Pho Sho: 83

Washington Generals: 110

In my work league I think I play in the hardest division- David killed me with Reggie Bush and Hines Ward. Santonio Homles and Heath Miller really let me down this week. I think I need to talk to Big Ben.

Yahoo! League

Pho Shizzle: 64

Roondogs: 62

Not only did Santonio Holmes let me down but for this team Braylon Edwads and Dallas Clark didn’t show up either. Luckily Tony Romo, Thomas Jones, and Jerricho Cotchery led me to victory.

Diet Yahoo! League

Donte’s $37 Million: 120

Gold. Pants. Bitch: 99

I had enough studs that performed- but I also have to note that LJ also had Tom Brady as his starting quarterback. Too bad I just picked up Matt Cassel in this league. Looks like the Patriots won’t be the only team freaking out from this weekend.
