Oscar Watch: Nominations Are In

by Patrick on January 22, 2009

vert330_81awards Well this morning the nominees were announced for the 81st Annual Academy Awards. While I’m only a few movies into my Oscar Watch this year, here’s my instant reactions:

So happy to see Frank Langella nominated for Best Actor- I haven’t seen the rest of the slate but no qualms there.

I think Robert Downey Jr. is a great actor who’s currently at the top of his game, however I am surprised to see a film like Tropic Thunder get any serious consideration. It’s kinda like an actor from Talladega Nights geting considered. I liked Tropic Thunder so I have no problems with the nod, just surprised.

I’m not saying Heath Ledger isn’t worthy of his nomination, but does he win because of his tragic death? I’ll have to see the rest of those nominees to see if Heath was truly the best of the five.

Slumdog Millionare has a 2 out of 3 change to win Best Song, that means it’ll lose and that Wall-E song will win instead.

The Best Picture nominees held no surprises but I’m disappointed there’s no token comedy- but I guess there was no Juno this year.

Here’s my revised priority Oscar Watch list:

  • Curious Case of Benjamin Button
  • Dark Knight (Re-watch)
  • Milk
  • The Reader
  • Doubt
  • Changeling
  • The Wrestler

After I tackle these seven I’ll see how many more I can take out. I got 31 days. Here we go!

Did you get to see Slumdog Millionaire? My bets are on that… but I won’t be so sad if it doesn’t win because it got a Golden Globe.
The Reader was really good, so I suggest you see that soon.
