I decided to re-watch The Dark Knight since it is the recipient of 8 Oscar nomination including an expected and hyped supporting actor nod to the late Heath Ledger.
I decided to watch The Dark Knight and Batman Begins back-to-back, a sorta little Batman marathon. I’ve always been a fan of re-watching movies before seeing their sequels. In this case I actually didn’t get to see Batman Begins before Dark Knight so I enjoyed watching the Batman Begins then The Dark Knight immediately after. The two films are epic action movies which came together to form a sorta 5 hour journey for the caped crusader.
The big performance of the film has to be Heath Ledger as The Joker. His tragic death led to early calls for Oscar for what was expected to be an Oscar caliber performance. He didn’t disappoint. Now that we are days away from Oscar Sunday and he’s pretty much a lock for Best Supporting Actor… or he is?
Sasha Stone over at Awards Daily is a fan but think there is a possibility of an upset. While I’m going to expand upon my reasons and the issue more on Friday, I think that there is no question that Heath is worthy of the nomination- and is worthy of the win.
A performance that raised a lot of eyes and questions was that as Christian Bale as Batman. Out of all of the actors that played Batman, I think Bale does an acceptable job with no glaring faults except his raspy, rumbling voice. I don’t think I’m only one to wonder why he chose to give Batman an angry muttering voice that has been the butt of many jokes:
The Dark Knight is a comic action movie that doesn’t disappoint. A classic struggle of good vs. evil, lots of explosions, danger, and spandex armor adds up to an entertaining experience. However this is more than just a movie. While the traditional commercial blockbuster film will earn Oscar nods in cinematography, special effects, and sound (see Bourne Ultimatum); the script is well written with themes of heroism and double identities woven into the piece. The Dark Knight is simply a notch above your average action movie.
