Yesterday was Selection Sunday, and the field of 65 was set for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Baksetball Tournament.
Out of all of the fantasy sports endeavors I undertake, March Madness is the one I play most casually. I don’t watch college basketball but I do enjoy filling out brackets and watching the games in March, rooting for my picks and hopefully ending up in the money.
This year I’m running my office pool so as I take a higher level of involvement I thought I’d take a moment to appreciate how much over analysis there is for what is pretty much a tournament where anything can happen.
If there wasn’t enough action on the tournament, there’s an entire science out there of trying to pick where will be selected to participate in the tourney. Bracketology has been around for quite some time and there are so many bracketologists out there that I just refer to The Bracket Project who tracks 78 experts and their picks of who will be seeded where on Selection Sunday.
Looking at the matrix it appears that the experts did a pretty good job at calling the seeds. The only glaring exceptions I see is Utah which got a 5 seed, a bit above expectations. Boston College got a 7 seed where experts were giving them anywhere between 12-9. It looks like Arizona was the big surprise as they unexpected get a 12 seed when most experts thought the school wouldn’t make it. Even the famous Joe Lundardi didn’t see it coming.
Well the table is set, now it’s time to dance!
If you don’t have your bracket yet you can print one out here.
