It’s What You Have Instead Of Your Show

flyerI pulled up to the parking lot on 16th street with Nicole to run the final rehearsal of the week for Rabbit Hole. As I got my things from the trunk I saw a Producer of the show get out of her car. As I was about to close my trunk she told me that I wouldn’t need those things for tonight.

That’s when I knew something was wrong.

As we walked across the street to the church she told me the bad news: Rabbit Hole was being put on hold indefinitely. The Foundry Players couldn’t secure the rights to the show and a professional theatre nearby has reserved the exclusive rights to the show til the fall.

The photo to the left is part of the flyer that would have gone out if the show had gone on. But it won’t.

Inside I met with the other producers and the President of the company. We talked a bit, tried to think of some alternatives, but ultimately the months spent putting up the show will not result in any performances.

At the time I was sad but because Nicole was there and my mind wasn’t entirely on the show. Now as I sit here and type this I feel a little sadness that I won’t be making my debut as a production stage manager. The hardest thing was to tell the cast members as they arrived to rehearse. They worked so hard to learn their lines, blocking, and explore the characters that they were trying to become. They took it relatively well compared to the outburst I expected to occur. Still I feel sad for all of them as well as everyone else that was so hard at work to make something wonderful.

So instead of a show to tell all my friends about and beg to go and see I have a script, a script with notes and blocking of what could of been. It’s what I have instead of my show. And I guess I’ll hold on to it and maybe sometime soon it will become a reality.

Til then it’s time to move on to the next show. Right now I’m taking a break from theatre for the summer but I hope to come back this fall with a new show under my belt.
