The Single Life: The Three Day Rule

recap_ep421I hate the rules.

I’ve already ranted about it before- so I won’t rehash it, but watching a recent episode of How I Met Your Mother got me thinking about one of the rules I love to agonize over: The Three Day Rule. In the episode, Barney and Marshall berate Ted for wanting to break the mandatory silence you must maintain before calling a girl. I’ve totally been in Ted’s shoes- he’s met a girl he really likes and wants to follow up sooner rather than later.

One question I want to ask is the three day period, I’ve always known it to be a two day period- am I wrong on that?

I’m still on the fence on where I side on this rule, I might wait a day but I may not. Once again if I am interested I’m going to call you.

What do you guys think about the rule? Stupid? Wise? A rule to prevent Patrick from looking so desperate?

  • I do not like this rule. Call if you want to call; do not play games.

    That’s all.

Well, I’m not a guy but I know it’s frustrating from a woman’s perspective. I guess 3 days is kind of the standard, and we know that, but if you have a FANTASTIC time, don’t wait. Be honest and TELL HER that you had really had a great time and would like to call tomorrow or the following day. Give her a specific day (whatever you decide) and then follow through with it. That way, there’s no game and everybody’s happy :)

  • When you get her number, tell her when you’ll call. If you wanna call the next day, do so. But if she doesn’t return the phone call or is “really busy right now and doesn’t have a lot of spare time” then it’s not going to work. But I say don’t think too much about it!

  • I’m so glad the ladies here agree with me- personally I would do what MeggiePoo has outlined, if I’m on my A-game I’ll get a number and mention when I’ll call.

Of course I don’t get many numbers but it’s fun to think about so I have a plan.

  • Three-day rule sucks. But also, if I don’t hear from someone within three days… I expect never to hear. So it’s got to be three days or sooner. Three days MAX.

    Eff the rules.

F the rules indeed- but I have become accustomed to that small social window if I want to really get together with a new friend.
