“To make people happy.”
At one point of time that was the mission statement for Disney. Today, it’s a little bit more complex.
I’ve been thinking about the mission statements recently, while my friend Ashlie recently devised a statement for her life and job, I’ve been thinking more about my blog (Darren Rowse recently wrote about blog mission statements as well.) I’ve thought about why I blog a couple of times already, and while I do know that my content is maturing and developing into a voice that is my own. I started this blog many years ago as a journal but I find myself writing less recaps and more about opinions, rants, and topics I want to talk about and spread the word about. I’m happy to see a couple of people have taken notice and decided to read. To that I’m eternally grateful, but I gotta remember in the end I’m really writing for me. I find myself trying getting too caught up about readership when I should really worry more about writing content I’m happy with.
If I had to write a blog mission statement I still think that one idea that hasn’t changed is the idea of expression. My friend f.B was on to something in a recent blog comment with the idea of creative expression. In the early years I wanted a complete record of everything I did, but do I (or do people want to read) where I really went or what I ate for dinner? Not really, however people do enjoy stories, opinions, and questions. I like to think that I’m maturing as a blogger to a style that’s more enjoyable for people to read. I hope you learn a little bit about how I think and that it inspires you to think about yourself a little bit in comparison.
While I’m still working on it, I’m learning lots from the people I enjoy reading, who have really have their shit together when it comes to what they are all about: LiLu, The Pumpernickel, and Maxie. Through my blog I’ve met so many wonderful people that share the same passion for blogging. Using my blog as a way to meet new friends is something I’ve never expected.
That being said I hope you enjoy the new layout of the page, I added some new bells and whistles.
What would you like to see that would make my blog better?

I’m sure you can find a happy medium between the two — while certainly I don’t care to know that stomach cramps kept you on the toilet all night long, I know I enjoy going through my archives to find out what I was doing last year on this date.

Don’t ever lose track of what’s important…which is what YOU want…what you want out of the blog, writing and interacting. As long as you don’t lose sight of that, what others want doesn’t matter…because we’ll be here with you through your journey via YOUR words.
That’s all that really matters.
I’m really glad we met…Really glad.

I know it sounds silly, but I just write about what I want to write about. If I’m not into it I won’t write it.
Thanks for the compliment– at least I’ve got my shit together when it comes to blogging. I promise you that’s the only aspect of my life that’s on track.

I actually have no idea what my blog is. There’s no theme. Actually, I guess there is: it’s just conversation. And sometimes I’ll talk about politics, or tell jokes, or recommend music… It’s just conversation. Holy snarkies, Batman: I think I just found my mission statement.
But right, for you: I like the new layout. But content-wise… find the posts you’re most proud of and repeat what made them special.

I agree with all the above statements. Just go with what you know. However, I am intrigued by this “blog mission statement.” Maybe that would help me focus my energy. Whatever you go with, remember it is YOUR writing and even though it is read by others, it is still yours. Keep it up bro!

Malnurtured Snay: Thanks for returning that image to my head (shudders)
PQ: Thanks for the encouragement, the time you take to read me, and the Jungle Juice!
Maxie: If you had more of your shit together I’d be dead. No lie.
f.B: Don’t forget the verse- the verse if free over at your blog!
JustJP: Ya check out some of Darren’s stuff if you want to know more about mission statements- mine might need a Proof rating.

i think some of the best blogs are those that are more than just “this is what i did and here’s what i ate.” unfortunately… mine is pretty much just that. but it works for me – like malnurtured snay, i appreciate having a record of my life that i can go back and check up on. also i hate confrontation so writing controversial posts about “real” topics would never fly for me

I would never say I write “real” topics… but I’m glad somebody else out there sees their blog as a living diary.

I’m with Maxie… whatever I’m feeling, that’s what ends up on the page, simple as that. The one thing I have to remind myself of is that not everything needs to be entertaining… if I have someone to say just because it’s important to me, that’s okay too.

LiLu: What you write is always entertaining not because of what happens in your life, but the way you view life. Pooping your pants could be embarrassing- or for you, hilarious. I think we all enjoy and can learn from your positive view of life’s messy moments.
Lusty Reader: Thank you so much, I’m trying to make the blog more user friendly and include more about what I’m all about- because this is a blog about me
