Do I Become An Uber Trendy Geek?

dell-mini-9-holdAs I fly out today for my sister’s engagement party with suit, laptop, and Vietnamese food in tow; I’m thinking about how I can reduce the amount of baggage I take with me (physical baggage that is- I’ll always have the emotional baggage.)

Now I enjoy my laptop, it has a Blu-ray and an HDTV tuner, but it’s also on the ginormous side and rightfully so for a laptop with so many features.

However this week I saw Mike receive a new Dell Mini and it got me thinking about going smaller and buying a Netbook.

Netbooks appear to be all the rage right now, my sister and Mom both have the Acer Aspire One and  the senior staff around the office have been sporting small computing machines for quite some time.

I have always been somewhat hesitant to take my laptop out of my room with all the wires anchoring it down, thus I hardly take my laptop outside to enjoy a nice day while blogging. A smaller laptop would make it more easier for me just grab it and go off to my third-place to write and not be so anti-social. Netbooks are also pretty affordable, with the Dell Mini starting at $299.

Sounds great right? Well here’s my big counterpoint, if I get another laptop I’ll officially have way too many computers.

Right now I have my laptop that I do most of my computing from, I wouldn’t get rid of it because a Netbook would really serve as a travel device for surfing the web and blogging. There wouldn’t be enough computing power for doing some of the multimedia things that I sometimes do.

I also have a desktop that I use solely for video editing and on top of that I currently use my old laptop from college as a print server. A netbook would be a fourth computer in an already geeky looking side of the room.

I could simply get rid of my old laptop and free up space that way. I really don’t need a second laptop solely for printing and watching streaming video while computing. Plus I’d free up table space since I would probably keep a Netbook in a bag in the closet, pulling it out when I wanna be a geek outside the room.

Is it just me or is three computers just too many to have?

  • I only have one computer, and it’s an Asus eee. It has, like, pretty much zero memory, but it’s easy to use and very light.

I believe we have four computers in our house: my laptop, Dan’s laptop (that doesn’t really work right now, it’s really slow and he needs to reconfigure it), Dan’s desktop, and I believe he’s also borrowing a desktop from work.

Well four amongst two isn’t that bad- even if he has three of them…

  • Anything more than one computer per person seems a little much. But to have a laptop that you can take with you outside your room is a good thing. I have a laptop which I too, don’t normally unplug from it’s power-hogging cords, but if I need to, I can.

You should probably have one, good laptop which can be portable and you can use for everything and whatever other computer you seem to need for video editing. (Why you can’t also use a laptop, I don’t know.)

Netbooks are sweet. I love my Sony Vaio for travel, its not quite a netbook with its C2D processor, but it weighs like 1lb. It just sucks that it’s solid state hard drive is so small! And no you don’t have too many computers, of course you could probably be better off with just one heavy duty desktop and run virtual clients on there if necessary. Also get a docking station for your laptop already!

I’ve got two laptops — a Dell and my MacBook — and a tower I basically built several years ago. Three is a perfect number.

Things are good in three’s… I think if I get a Netbook this year I’m ditching a laptop for balance.

My friend, 3 computers is nothing stop worrying. We have 7. My daughter has her netbook, her desktop, and her new and old laptops. I have a laptop for the study, a laptop for the living room, and a laptop to tote to Starbucks. I know I told the kid to get rid of the old laptop there are laptopless children out there.
