I Am This Serious About My Drafts
It’s back from the dead- much like Brett Favre.
For the first Fantasy Friday I thought I’d quickly recap a week of unprepared drafts in what has been a true jump into Fantasy Football season.
I’ve started to set-up my cheat sheets and browsing through The Football Outsiders Almanac, but I wouldn’t say I was in any shape about drafting players- however I had two drafts this week that I managed to survive. While I’m going to break down my teams later after I actually have done my research/homework but I’ll tell you how I drafted two teams through two very unconventional ways.
The first league I drafted this season was the 96-team league hosted by The Fantasy Football Librarian. With so many teams, the league is actually a collection of five separate 16-team leagues. Because of the large number of players, we are having a slow-turn draft with give hours between every pick. While it’s been nice to make picks in a casual manner, it’s taking forever as you can see. The thought of a hard-core, 16-team league means I’m going to be playing with quite a few scrubs, maybe since the draft is taking so long I’ll be fully prepared with info for the end of the draft.
This past Tuesday I drafted my team for the 4 Sport Boston league during Rocky Horror rehearsals. I asked my good friend Mike (who was also in the league) to enter my picks as I talked to him over my bluetooth headset. I definitely looked like that guy as I was pacing up and down the hallway with my cheat sheets, trying to keep track of the draft. According to Mike I was taking, “too f^*&ing long to pick,” and I was, “screaming like 10 names at once.”
I probably was shouting 10 names at once since I had no idea who was being picked and had to ask who was available (and my Mike was really quiet over my headset so I asked him to repeat names a lot)- I was also talking out loud through my picks, so I was juggling names of possible choices. I have to buy Mike a case of beer for having to listen to myself think out loud- but at least you now know I take my drafts seriously. I did make the mistake of waiting too long for a pick- and I drafted a kicker somewhere in the middle rounds.
If you ever seen me fully prepared for a draft you’ll see me with tons of papers, and more focused than I’ve ever been. Trying to draft over a phone with no research did leave me in a Pho Phrazzled state- but I don’t think my team is too too bad. I’ll have to rate my draft after I am fully studied up for the season.
Til then, watch out for me for my next two drafts (yes I’m in four leagues this year.) I’ll be a force to be reckoned with- and hopefully you won’t be listening to the flurry of my thoughts as I calculate projections faster than Good Will Hunting.
