Fantasy Football: A Long Draft Weekend

88235956JW024_PHILADELPHIA_

You know you got a jokster in the league when this guy is a first-round pick.

You know what’s the hard part of having five fantasy football teams? It’s not trying to remember who’s on what team, or trying to manage five different line-ups.

The hardest thing about owning multiple teams is trying to draft them all before the start of the season.

While the draft is actually one of the most enjoyable parts of the game, sometimes you can have too much of a good thing- especially when you try to fit a few these drafts over a weekend or two, which is exactly what happened last weekend. Sunday I drafted the DC-Boston league, the first of three drafts I had. I spent Friday and Saturday trying to cram and prep- I’ve been so busy with work and Rocky Horror Show to actually get my full prep on. Adam came over to draft his team too; except he was running late and he ended up auto-drafting the first few rounds… not a terrible move except he had some weird pre-rankings and took Michael Vick with the first pick of the draft.

You could imagine the reaction that had in the draft room. I wasn’t too surprised by the move, two years ago he actually took him in the first round as a joke, and this year I think he actually had him as a deep sleeper but erroneously had him at the top of his pre-rank list.

Last night I had two drafts, one starting at 7:30 and the other starting at 7:45. If you think trying to draft two leagues at the same time is challenging, I was also recording a 4 Sport Boston Podcast with Craig at the same time. It was kinda pimp however to create a dual screen situation for my simultaneous drafts however.

Having three computers in a room: geeky. Drafting two fantasy football teams at the same time: uber nerd.

So now that all the drafts are done, here’s a snapshop of my fantasy football teams this year:

The DC-Boston League

Beltway Bandits

Draft Slot: 5th

What I Love: A RB group with lots of potential (Maurice Jones-Drew, Kevin Smith, Joseph Addai, Donald Brown, Darren McFadden, Shonn Green, and Fred Jackson); the fact I own the entire Colts running game.

What I Hate: An elite WR corp of Andre Johnson, Roddy White, and Eddie Royal on the bench but not much else after that- my success depends on being able to depend on Johnson and White. I’m happy to own Tony Romo on a fantasy team for the third year but I am a bit nervous about how this year will be without T.O.

Notable Draft Moments:  Besides the first round Micheal Vick, not a whole lot.

4 Sport Boston League

Donte’s 17 Games Off

Draft Slot: 10th

What I Love: RBs that should be solid if healthy in Steven Jackson and Frank Gore; grabbing a IDP stud in Patrick Willis.

What I Hate: My WR is somewhat terrible; having to pretty much blow up my IDP picks after letting Mike pick random players to fill those slots.

Notable Draft Moments:  Drafting over the phone during a Rocky Horror rehearsal. If you saw me I was in a back room while the cast was dancing- screaming names into a bluetooth headset, looking like some high-powered, Wall Street douchebag.

James Bond League

Thunderballz

Draft Slot: 5th

What I Love: A pretty much well-balanced team full of decent starters at all positions; an IDP roster that I can be proud of (now that I kinda knew what I was doing.)

What I Hate: Nothing much really- probably my 2nd favorite team of the 5 I have.

Notable Draft Moments:  The first of two leagues I drafted simultaneously while podcasting- listen to the podcast for exactly I was thinking throughout the draft.

Corey’s Friend League

Pho 75

Draft Slot: 2nd

What I Love: I own Turner the Burner. However I am a believer in the curse of 370

What I Hate: I slept on QB and went for Matt Schaub later in the draft (I only hate it in that he’s a risk/reward play); I will have better RB depth once Marshawn Lynch is back but til then I’m scraping for RBs.

Notable Draft Moments:  Second of the two leagues I simultaneously drafted; got Antonio Gates in the 4th round only to forget I did that and draft Zach Miller five rounds later… hey I wasn’t really paying attention to this league while drafting the other one.

Fantasy Football Librarian League

Beltway Bandits

Draft Slot: 10th

This e-mail draft took forever and a day to complete, and I’m not a fan of the site it’s hosted on. However I do like how the site generates a recap of your draft:

Coach Patrick Pho had a humdrum draft in the recent 2009 FFLibrarian League draft. Their Beltway Bandits franchise came away with the number 10 ranked draft (out of 16) in the league based on analysis by MyFantasyLeague.com.

Beltway Bandits made their best pick of the draft in round 6, selecting Ben Roethlisberger with the 87th pick of the draft, as compared to the 67th spot he should have been selected in, according to ADP rankings. “I hope he doesn’t fall down a lot,” Beltway Bandits coach Patrick Pho said.

Beltway Bandits made their worst pick of the draft in round 3, selecting Derrick Ward with the 42nd pick of the draft, as compared to the 70th spot he should have been selected in, according to ADP rankings. “I really thought he’d be the starter in Tampa Bay…,” Beltway Bandits coach Patrick Pho said.

With a little bit of work on the waiver wire this season, or a few strategic trades, coach Patrick Pho should be able to turn their 10th ranked draft effort into a championship fantasy team this year.

Well those are my teams for the year, expect weekly updates for the next 17 weeks as we kick off another year of Fantasy Football fun!
