On Kanye West’s VMA Meltdown: Why You Shouldn’t Be MadI'm not going to say you are a jerk- instead I'm going to ask why did you think it was cool to turn your hair into a maze? Also you are a jerk. (Photo: Christopher Polk/Getty Images) If you look at the footer, you see I’ve already categorized this post as a rant. In fact I rescheduled another post that was originally supposed to go up now so I could immediately say what was on my mind. Kanye West pretty much did the same thing during tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards. I’ve long since given up on watching MTV, even as a 25 year old it’s a network that’s fallen out of touch for me. Lucky for them they have Kanye West stirring the pot and bringing the spotlight back to the network for 15 more minutes. While I was watching the Bears/Packers game, I noticed a few people were watching the VMAs and weren’t very happy about it. After the game I decided to see what all the buzz was about: Kanye had yet another meltdown during an awards show, where he stormed the stage during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech to say he thought Beyonce should have won. Well at least we didn’t rant about how he should of won. Kanye must know that ranting about how Kanye should of won is SO 2007. In 2009 it’s hip to rant about how OTHER PEOPLE should of won. And of course he must think it’s ALWAYS cool no matter what you rant about, that you disrespect whoever is on stage by telling him or her you mean no disrespect. Of course he was booed and is probably banned from future awards shows (how hasn’t he been already?) At least Beyonce was classy enough to give Taylor her moment after it was ruined. When I first heard of this incident of course my natural inclination was to think Kanye is a bag of douche. Lots of people had the same reaction (if you didn’t already think Kanye West is a douchebag.) I also immediately thought of this SNL sketch he did: When I first saw this years ago I thought it was funny. I still think it’s funny but now I realize he really does say the same things when he rants on stage. He’s already apologized on his blog but this time he’s gone too far. It’s one thing when you get mad toward a group of other artists because you didn’t win- that’s being a sore loser. However it’s different when you walk up to the winner and say to her face in front of millions that she wasn’t worthy of an award. Also it doesn’t help when the person you embarrass happens to look as cute and innocent as Taylor Swift. You pretty much look like the villain in a cartoon movie. It not only takes balls to do such a thing but it takes a certain cockiness as well; a quality Kanye is very self-aware of. So you can say Kanye is a douchebag, you can say he has no manners, you can talk about how much this is going to hurt his image and how it’s going to boost the image of Taylor Swift and Beyonce. All these things are true and irrefutable. However the huge media backlash we’ll see on blogs, TV, and news is exactly the kind of attention Kanye West doesn’t deserve. Everytime he pulls a prank like this we can’t stop talking about him, and while nobody will really know why he decides to do these ridiculous things- we know that every time it happens we can’t stop talking about him and how much we hate him or how stupid he is. Simply put, Kanye is a heel (if you aren’t a pro-wrestling fan it’s a term for the bad guy, the guy you are supposed to root against.) Kanye meltsdown, we root against him, he gets his due attention and we’ll boo him again when he does his next dastardly deed. If you really want to express your disgust towards Kanye, do so and then never speak of it again. Because whether it’s bad news or good, Kanye is now the center of attention- just like he wanted. Do you really want to give him that satisfaction?

You pose a great point and I will speak nothing of it after this comment. What I really would love to say is…
I don’t think Kanye’s “apology” is a real apology. If you’ll read it, he goes on to say that Beyonce’s video was the best anyway. So basically, he’s sorry he jumped the gun and made an ass of himself when Beyonce was going to get the better award anyway. His apology is the equivalent of saying, “I didn’t know!” The real matter here is that Kanye should not be pompous enough to think that his opinion is more valid than anyone else’s. I’m sure several in the audience–maybe Taylor included–thought Beyonce was a more deserving winner, but what made the difference is that Kanye felt like he needed to tell everyone he thought Beyonce was more deserving, and that’s why he is the quintessential ass.

Victoria that’s a great way to say it- in Men’s Health he calls it confidence, but in reality it’s brazen and obnoxious. Thanks for reading!

You’re right. No such thing as bad press, right? Still, his mother’s got to be spinning in her grave.

That’s my exact point- I wish his mother was still with us to give him a talking to, however I wonder if she said anything during his past outbursts.

Uh. It’s definitely “should have won”, not “should of won” – are you 10?

I don’t know what it is going to take for Kanye to see how much of a spoiled, immature and self-centered he is. If the world does not revolve around him in the manner he thinks it should, he lashes out without regard for the facts or feeling of anyone else. He has been doing this since at least 2001 and shows no signs learning his lesson. He is a very talented artist who is in danger of destroying a promising career with his lack of self control.

That’s the other angle that not a whole lot of people will see because they are too busy being angry at him- I personally love his music and a part of me is dissapointed that he had to act so uncouth.

I think that MTV has been conditioning the public to accept the artist & their art as a whole when what we need is to judge artist & art separately. I am having trouble reconciling who Michael Jackson was as a person with the immense tributes to his art we’ve been dealing with recently. Kanye is a product of this new view that who you are as a person is part of your art. The development of your artist persona is just as important to your fame and riches as the actual art you create. Art should be one thing to be proud of and your persona another. Instead, the art is working to excuse the behavior of the artist.

This is a really good point, it’s hard to listen to Chris Brown and Kanye and enjoy it like I have in the past- without thinking of the bad things they have done as people.
Spot on, dude.
I didn’t watch (the Bears/Packers finish was crazy) and I’m actually cool not ever giving him the satisfaction.

Kanye West/Joe Wilson. Separated at birth?
Publicity stunts are just that. Kanye’s exceptional at them.

Do you think Kanye is simply doing it for publicity? I’d say maybe he’s really a cry-baby and self-centered person, but if he’s doing this in a calculated method than it would certainly be something…

I think Taylor should have used her “moment” to say, “Well, I’ve been thinking backstage. How could I win this award against you, Beyonce? Here is your award for Best Female Video. *Hand moonman to Beyonce then pretend to open imaginary envelope* and the award for biggest, meanest, jerk to the prettiest, nicest country artist goes to… Kanye West.” crowd would have roared. Honestly though, logic would dictate Beyonce wins both awards.

Maybe MTV was trying to spread the love? It would of been cool if Taylor did something like that but I don’t think anybody short of a comedian would of been able to think on their feet like that.

ugh im so out of it! glad you posted this today because i hadn’t heard anything about this yet…poor taylor swift, what a shitty, low class thing to do. kanye’s behaviour is an example of how some people on our society are regressing and people like him make the world a less civilized place.

Isn’t this douchebag’s 15 minutes up yet?? Can’t we just kill this jackoff piece of shit?? I don’t buy this whole publicity stunt thing. I mean I could become a household name by going to various Ponderosa restaurants and defecating on the salad bars, but is that really the kind of attention I would want?? To become known as the “Mad Pooper”?!? We need to stop paying attention to him and encouraging his ridiculous behavior. Maybe then he will fade away like a bad fart. Big thumbs up to Beyonce for her generosity, though.

I totally missed this happening but I can’t say that it’s all that surprising; Kayne West is pretty lame. I was in Boston for the weekend and Boston totally wins over watching the VMAs.

I thought it was hillarious. What he should of said is “Beyonce put out the best female album ever and Tayor should not have even been nominated dont nobody listen to that country bullshit nomore so Taylor sit your country ass down somewhere” now that would of really been funny. Good job Kanye u da man.
