Last week I was reading a fantasy football article on CBS Sports. I wanted to print it out so I could read it offline later in the day. As I dragged my cursor to the print button on the post I noticed a little pop-out logo.
CBS has sold the rights to the print button.
Earlier this month I read a Matt Taibbi article where he wrote about the extreme level of advertising in sports. He ends the piece with a bold prediction that, “we’re five years away from some enterprising executive coming up with a formula for selling naming rights to the actual play-by-play. Are you ready for ‘Trojan Magnum third down and seven’?”
Seeing what CBS Sports did makes me believe Matt’s theory: I cannot wait for the Trojan Magnum 3rd down and 7. I hope the offense converts it to a Coca Cola 1st and 10.

There is an awful joke in there connecting the Trojan Magnums, Coca Cola and an unwanted pregnancy…but then again, I’m pretty much a monster.
I’m more prone to think that Epson probably approached CBS sports though, looking for new ways to get into consumers minds. It could have been the other way too, or maybe a combination of an ad exec at CBS and a campaign manager at Epson. Either way though, I kind of like it. Granted, I don’t like the idea of each little segment with a different sponsor, I can only imagine the kind of coordination between announcer and sales department that would take.

Oh I’m not hating on the execution- it was a slick idea and well implemented. I just can’t believe it reached that level.

Wouldn’t it be more appropriate if the Jack Daniels First and Ten led to the Trojan Magnum Third and Seven, which then led to the Tempur-Pedic Bed First and Goal to Go?

I like the thinking here- may we should start sponsoring play-by-play. Think about what we can do with Baseball!
The Trident First Base followed by the Victoria’s Secret Second Base.

when i was little, i used to pick up old Mad Magazines from the 70s from local yard sales. one spoof was about how football “in the future” was going to report on, like, EVERY ANGLE! with, like, FIVE DIFFERENT COMMENTATORS! one might even be ON THE FIELD! HA! wouldn’t that be HILARIOUS!
…oh wait. shit. coke 1st and 10, here we come.

Don’t forget the Jack Daniels 2nd and 8 which then leads to the Trojan 3rd and 7…
