No Day Like Today

I don’t know a whole lot about musicals.

That’s always been my M.O. As a stage manager I prefer working on plays, however I have a certain musical stuck in my head right now: Rent.

Before, I didn’t know anything about the show, only the assumption that everybody in the show had AIDS.

I was right about that.

I started doing PR work for KAT’s production of it this winter and I saw performances of it at Keegan and in Kensington.

Now it’s stuck in my head. Better that than Lady Gaga right?

I’ve come to learn however that I’m not alone in my new love for Rent- it seems like everybody loves it. So I guess I’m finally joining the party.

Songs stuck in my head right now? Another Day and What You Own:

What is it about Rent that makes me love it so much- the catchy music? The 90′s garb? The scaffolding? I’m not sure- but at least I know it’s not because everyone has AIDS.

    Rent is an awesome show. It’s deep, it’s intense, and the music is an integral part of all that. The music kind of brings all of the messages contained in the storyline down to a more gut feeling kind of level and helps people to really feel the story.

      There are clear, recognizable themes in the score and it is really executed well.

    But you should look into In the Heights & Next to Normal. I think they’d get stuck in your head too.

    OMG i fell in love with RENT in 7th grade, the year it came out (to date myself). my bestest best little tween friends and i saved alll our babysitting money to each buy the 2 disc cd of the musical and memorized the words in our own bedrooms before belting them out all together at slumber parties.

    my parents finally took me to see it because it was based on one of their favorite operas “La Boheme” where Mimi dies of TB. So many of the scenes and lines from RENT are taken 100% directly from La Boheme.

    I still wear my No Day But Today tshirt to sleep in.

    I agree with Diana, welcome to the bandwagon… don’t know why it took you so long when Diana and I were such huge rent-heads back in the day.
