Watering Down My Drinks

12993How do I write this post without sounding like a total lush?

I mean I want to write about this new drink I’ve been trying out but when my trial run of it includes a weekend of destruction before St. Patrick’s Day, then St. Patrick’s Day itself, then this past weekend. I guess you can say I’ve been out a lot. I guess Jessie was right- March is a tough month.

Well anyways, y’all know I love to find new drinks to order at the bar, I prefer liquor over beer and I prefer clear spirits like vodka and rum over bourbon and whiskey- I could probably drink Jack but I’ve noticed how I feel better the next day after clear liquors. Well I was listening to The B.S. Report when Bill Simmons mentioned his new favorite stand-by: a flavored vodka with sparkling water/soda. He swears by it, easy to drink, not drinking lots of extra calories in juice or soda, and doesn’t leave him with much of a hangover.

The only problem is that he feels girly ordering it. He hopes for the drink to develop a nickname that he can easily slide to a bartender without having to yell, “GREY GOOSE RASPBERRY AND SPARKLING WATER!”

Being of sound masculinity I decided to try the drink at the Laughing Man Tavern during a happy hour for Wendi (who was back in town.) It was surprisingly good and I drink a couple more that night. That night I came home and sang Lady Gaga for my roommates. Epic.

At Eighteenth Street Lounge for Maricha’s birthday I decided to go to it again. The night was amazingly quiet for a Friday, I forgot it was the Saturday before Shamrock Fest- which I heard was really more of a FLOP. What’s really scary about the drink combo is that eventually it does reach a point where it tastes like water.

I stuck to beer the next few nights: Miller Lite during a roommate bonding night that included drinking in a bedroom like we still live in a dorm; more Miller during The WATCH Awards; and Irish beer on St. Patrick’s Day with some cool people at Eleventh.

During Jessie’s rad birthday party I went back to it and it was all I drank during Maricha’s birthday: The Sequel (where I ate at Ben’s Chili Bowl for the first time.) Through all these days of testing I had no problem ordering the drink- I didn’t feel like I was being a girly-man or anything. In fact I’m really enjoying this newly discovered drink.

Do you judge people based on what they drink?

It’s ok I wouldn’t want anybody else judging me. Maybe God. God can judge me. Wait a minute…

I don’t care what you drink as long as it results in you running in circles in our house singing Bad Romance. = Awesome.

  • I remembered asking you what you were drinking, but either i didn’t hear you or remember that’s what you were drinking.

My brother has gotten harassed before for ordering chocolate drinks. He bought a bottle of chocolate liquer once, and his friends were all hounding him. I think they were just jealous. Who doesn’t like the great combination of alcohol + chocolate?!

Haha! Wow…you so remind me of my 20s. I love these party posts. Heh.

Back OT: I’m with LiLu. I did once work with a guy who always insisted on ordering frozen strawberry margaritas without salt. I mean, come ON.

Me? Bourbon & ginger, all the way. And not rail Bourbon, either.

Yes if you are going to get a Margarita- you need the salt.

  • Grape vodka and soda is an old standby for me (tastes basically like grape soda, but without the sugar). But I love blueberry vodka. Even I feel ridiculous ordering blueberry vodka, though. I think it’s the extra syllables and the fact that, as a general rule, I’m a beer drinker.

If Bill Simmons drinks it, then I think it is ok. All guys like “girly” drinks, you’re just being honest. I propose getting rid of the “girly” label entirely: drinks are either good, or not good.

  • I do judge – just a little – but I’m prepared to eat my words if it’s delicious. That said, my go-to drink (aside from beer), is just your classic gin and tonic. Especially in the summer.

Gin and Tonics are great but I drank them all throughout senior year in college- I thought I was such a grown up.

Now I can’t touch another one ever again.

  • I’ve started drinking those as well…vodka sodas (with flavors or not) seem to be my new thing. Now, if you’re a guy with a pink drink, I might wonder, but I don’t even ask anymore…

  • Ever had a gin Rickey? It was invented in DC and is now the city’s signature drink. It’s gin, soda water (note: NOT tonic water!!!) and lime. Or, I make it with with Sprite. Tastes so good…. It’s sweeter than a gin & tonic. My current fav is the Dark & Stormy, but few places have ginger beer (yeah, not ginger ale. it’s not gingery enough).

  • i absolutely judge people on what they order. especially if we’ve just met – there are so few things to go off of in the crucial first hours/days of knowing someone, i feel i must use it all.

besides, don’t you judge women on what they order? cosmo = high maintenance, whiskey = rough around the edges, etc. maybe?

    i’m always a gin&tonic girl.

  • i’ve been drinking plain vodka / soda with lime, but flavored vodka would be a GREAT idea! what flavor do you usually do? raspberry?

  • when i’m not drinking beer this is what i do too. i can only drink clear liquor, anything else destroys me. i really like stoli flavored vodkas, the blueberry kicks ass.

i wouldn’t judge a guy for drinking this, one of my guy friends i drink with pretty often almost always orders something along these lines. however, if you ordered a sex on the beach, i’d certainly be talking some shit.

  • I have to admit, I do judge people by their drinks.

A guy who drinks a colorful fruity drink .. I write him off as soft.
A guy who drinks beers and whiskey .. I write him off as tough.

A girl who drinks fruity drinks .. is a girly girl.
A girl who only drinks beer (all the time) .. is a butch.

That’s my 2 cents. hehe. But I think you’re in between the two categories of men if your drink is clear .. but tastes fruity. You’re a tough softie !?

I don’t know- I think it’s kinda hard core. Last night I ordered a drink and the bartender gave me a small bottle of soda on the site, and I forgot to mix it. I was drinking vodka straight and I didn’t realize it til I was half way done.

Hahaha ! I did that as well with a gin tonic .. I was sipping on my gin until I told my friend that my gin tonic tasted funny. And then she pointed at the small bottle of tonic water that the bartender had put next to my drink, but that I failed to notice. Who needs soda or tonic anyway ?! lol

  • I judge everything people do.

At the improv on friday night a grown man was drinking a smirnoff ice.

    yea.
